The Jumbo-Holdsworth circuit is one of the classic tramping and trail running circuits in the Tararua Ranges, offering a full day of alpine adventure through some of the most dramatic terrain in the lower North Island.

Starting from Holdsworth Road End, the circuit takes runners through dense native bush, up to the exposed tops where weather can change rapidly, and through alpine terrain that demands respect and preparation.

The Jumbo-Holdsworth circuit — dramatic Tararua terrain

This is a route for experienced trail runners and trampers. The Tararua Ranges are known for their unpredictable weather, and runners should be prepared with appropriate gear including waterproofs, navigation tools, and sufficient food and water for a long day out.

The circuit can be run in either direction. The clockwise route via Jumbo is generally preferred as it tackles the steeper climb early while legs are fresh.
